You keep the same name. Only the company that manages it changes. Think of it as moving your bank account to a new bank while keeping the same account holder. The new registrar requests the domain, and you prove you are allowed to move it.

Why It Matters for Your Business

Businesses transfer domains to consolidate everything in one place, to get better support or pricing, or to take control away from an old provider. A contractor whose domain sits in a former designer’s account can transfer it into his own account so he is never locked out again.

Good to Know

Before transferring, unlock the domain, turn off privacy if the old registrar requires it, and get the auth code. Domains usually cannot be transferred for a set period after they are registered or last transferred. Check that your DNS settings will carry over, or your email and website could go down.

Related terms

Auth codeDomain registrarNameserverDNSWebsite migration

← PreviousDomain renewalNext →Email alias

Want hosting handled?

Fast, secure WordPress hosting with updates, backups and monitoring taken care of.
See WordPress hosting

Step-by-step guides

How to Choose and Register a Domain Name for Your Business

More in Domains & DNS

Domain nameTop-level domainCountry-code TLDSubdomainDomain registrarICANNWHOISDomain privacy

Learn / Glossary / Domains & DNS Domain Transfer Explained.
