In smithplumbing.com, the TLD is .com. Think of it like the last line of a mailing address that tells the post office which region to route to. There are more than a thousand TLDs today, from familiar ones like .com and .org to newer ones like .salon or .studio.

Why It Matters for Your Business

The TLD shapes how people remember and trust your address. Most customers assume a business site ends in .com, so if you choose a different ending, some people will type .com by habit and land somewhere else. A tennis coach using a newer ending like .coach can look creative, but should still own the .com version if it is available.

Good to Know

If you can, register your name in .com and point any other endings you buy to the same site. Avoid unusual endings that look like spam to some email filters or that customers will not recognize. That way, whichever version a customer types, they still reach your business instead of a stranger’s page.

Related terms

Domain nameCountry-code TLDDomain registrarICANN

← PreviousTitle tagNext →TTL

Need this done right?

Fixed-price websites from $800, built and launched for you in as little as 5 days.
See website packages

Step-by-step guides

How to Choose and Register a Domain Name for Your Business

More in Domains & DNS

Domain nameCountry-code TLDSubdomainDomain registrarICANNWHOISDomain privacyDomain transfer

Learn / Glossary / Domains & DNS Top-level Domain (TLD) In one sentenceA top-level domain is the ending of a web address, such as .com, .org or .net, that comes after the last dot in a domain name.
