The software itself is free and open source, which means anyone can use, study and modify it. You install it on a web host, choose a theme for the design, add plugins for extra features and manage content from a dashboard. Note that WordPress.org (the free software you host yourself) and WordPress.com (a hosted service) are related but different.<\/p><h2>Why It Matters for Your Business<\/h2><p>For small businesses, WordPress offers a strong mix of flexibility and ownership. A contractor can start with a simple brochure site and later add a project gallery, a quote form, a blog or online payments without rebuilding. Because it is so widely used, it is easy to find developers, tutorials and hosting. And since you control your installation, your content is not locked into one company.<\/p><h2>Good to Know<\/h2><p>The flip side of popularity is that WordPress is a common target for hackers, mostly through outdated plugins, themes and weak passwords.
