They form the headline and short summary in Google’s results. In this guide you will learn how to write both, add them in WordPress and check whether they are working.

Ranking on the first page only helps if people choose your result. A clear, specific title and description can earn more clicks from the same position, with no extra ad spend. They also help Google understand what each page is about.

⏱ 15 minutes per page◎ Beginner☰ 8 steps↻ Updated Oct 2026

On this pageWhat you needStepsCommon mistakesFAQ

What you need

A list of your most important pages

Admin access to your website

Google Search Console, if set up

Steps

1

Know what each one does

The title tag is a line of code in each page’s head section. Google usually shows it as the clickable blue headline, and browsers show it on the tab. The meta description is a short summary that Google may use as the gray text under the headline. Google can rewrite either one if it thinks other text on the page describes it better, so your job is to make yours the best option.

2

Start with what the searcher wants

Before writing, decide the main phrase someone would type to find this page, such as emergency plumber Evanston or bookkeeping for restaurants. Think about what that person hopes to find, whether that is a price, a phone number or proof you serve their area. Each page should focus on one topic, and its title and description should promise exactly what the page delivers.

3

Write a clear, unique title

Put the main topic first, add a helpful detail like your city or a key benefit, and end with your business name after a separator. For example: Emergency Plumber in Evanston, IL | Lakeside Plumbing. Google sets no fixed length, but it cuts off long titles to fit the screen, so around 50 to 60 characters is a practical target. Every page needs its own title. Avoid vague labels like Home or Services.

Tip: Make the title match the page’s main heading so Google sees one clear topic.

4

Avoid what makes Google rewrite titles

Google is more likely to replace your title when it is stuffed with repeated keywords, when many pages share nearly the same title, when it mentions an outdated year, or when it does not match what the page says. Write for a person, not a search engine. If you include a year or a price, update it whenever the page changes.

5

Write a description that earns the click

Summarize the page in one or two plain sentences and include specifics that help someone decide, such as service area, hours, starting price or a free estimate. Use active language and end with a reason to click. Google sets no maximum, but it trims long snippets, so roughly 140 to 160 characters keeps your key point visible. Never paste in a list of keywords.

6

Add them in WordPress

WordPress builds the title tag from the page’s title and the Site Title under Settings, then General. To set a custom search title and meta description for each page, most sites use an SEO plugin. Well-known free options include Yoast SEO, Rank Math and All in One SEO. Each adds a panel below the editor or in the sidebar with fields for both. Website builders offer the same fields in each page’s SEO settings.

Tip: Use only one SEO plugin, since two can output conflicting titles.

7

Prioritize your most important pages

Start with your homepage, main service or product pages and any page that already gets steady traffic. In Search Console, open the Performance report, turn on average CTR, and look at the Pages tab. Pages with many impressions but a low click rate are your best opportunities, because people already see them and are choosing someone else.

8

Check results and keep refining

Google needs to recrawl a page before changes show, which can take a few days to a few weeks. You can speed it up by inspecting the page in Search Console and requesting indexing. After about a month, compare clicks and click rate for that page with the month before. If nothing improved, try a sharper benefit or a clearer promise.

Common Mistakes

Using the same title or description on many pages, which makes them look interchangeable to Google and to searchers.

Cramming in every keyword you can think of, which reads as spam and invites Google to rewrite your title.

Promising something in the title or description, like a discount, that the page does not actually deliver.

FAQ
<details class="sfl-faq" open>
Do meta descriptions affect Google rankings?

Google has said its ranking systems do not use the meta description. It still matters, because a good description can appear as your snippet and persuade more people to click. More clicks from the same ranking means more visitors and leads, so it is worth writing a description for every important page.
</details><details class="sfl-faq">
Why does Google show a different title than the one I wrote?

Google sometimes builds its own title link when yours is missing, too long, repetitive across pages, outdated or does not match the page content. Making the title concise, unique and consistent with the page’s main heading makes it much more likely Google will use your version.
</details><details class="sfl-faq">
Should I put my business name in every title?

Usually yes, at the end, after a separator such as a vertical bar or hyphen.
