AAAA Record Explained.

In one sentenceAn AAAA record is a DNS record that points a domain to an IPv6 address, the newer and longer style of internet address.

What It Is

An AAAA record, often called a quad-A record, does the same job as an A record but for IPv6 addresses. IPv6 is a newer address format created because the world was running out of the older IPv4 addresses. IPv6 addresses are longer and use letters and numbers separated by colons. Think of it as a new, longer phone number format added when the old one ran out.

Why It Matters for Your Business

Many phones and home internet connections now use IPv6, so a site with a working AAAA record can be reached over either system. Most small business owners never touch this record, because hosts usually set it up or leave it out. It matters when a host supports IPv6 and you want your site reachable both ways.

Good to Know

A common mistake is leaving an old AAAA record in place after moving hosts. Some visitors then reach the old server while others reach the new one. When you move, check and update both A and AAAA records. If you are not sure, ask your new host whether it uses IPv6.
