HTTPS Explained.

In one sentenceHTTPS is the secure way browsers load websites, encrypting everything sent between a visitor and your site so no one else can read or alter it.

What It Is

HTTPS stands for Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure. HTTP is the set of rules a browser uses to request pages from a web server, and the S means the conversation is encrypted using a TLS certificate. You can spot it at the start of a web address, as in https://example.com. A plain http connection is like talking across a crowded room, while HTTPS is like stepping into a private office and closing the door.

Why It Matters for Your Business

Visitors type names, phone numbers, addresses and sometimes card details into your forms. HTTPS keeps that information private on public Wi-Fi at a coffee shop or airport. Google has confirmed it uses HTTPS as a ranking signal, and browsers warn people away from sites without it. For a contractor collecting quote requests, a "Not secure" label can quietly cost leads every week.

Good to Know

Switching to HTTPS is not finished once the certificate is installed. Set up a permanent redirect (called a 301 redirect) so every http address forwards to its https version, update internal links, and make sure Google Search Console knows about the https version of your site. Otherwise you can end up with duplicate versions of pages competing with each other in search results.
