JavaScript Explained.

In one sentenceJavaScript is the programming language that runs in the browser to make web pages interactive, powering things like menus, sliders, pop-ups, form checks and live chat.

What It Is

JavaScript is the language that makes web pages respond to you. HTML builds the page and CSS styles it, while JavaScript adds behavior: opening a mobile menu when you tap the icon, checking that an email address looks valid before a form is sent, showing a photo gallery or loading a chat window. Despite the similar name, it has nothing to do with the Java language. The similar name was a marketing decision made in the 1990s.

Why It Matters for Your Business

For a small business, JavaScript powers many of the tools you rely on, such as booking widgets, maps, review feeds and analytics tracking. The catch is that every script adds weight. A salon site with a slider, a pop-up, three tracking tools and a chat bubble can feel sluggish on a phone, and slow pages lose customers and can hurt search performance.

Good to Know

Before adding another plugin or embedded widget, ask whether it truly earns its place. Remove tools you installed for a test and forgot about. Speed testing tools like Google PageSpeed Insights will often point out heavy or unused JavaScript, which is a good starting list for cleanup.
