What It Is
A server-side language is code that runs on the computer hosting your website, before anything reaches the visitor. Think of a restaurant kitchen. Guests never see the cooking, they only get the finished plate. In the same way, the server does the work (looking up products, checking a login, saving a form) and sends back a finished page. Common examples include PHP, Python, Ruby, Node.js (JavaScript on the server) and C#.
Why It Matters for Your Business
This matters because it decides what your site can do and where it can live. A plain brochure site may need very little server-side code. A site that takes bookings, shows a member area or sends a quote by email needs it. For example, when a contractor’s quote form emails the office and saves a copy, a server-side language is doing that job behind the scenes.
Good to Know
A practical tip: ask your developer which language your site uses before choosing hosting. WordPress is built on PHP, so it needs a host that supports a current, maintained PHP version. Matching the language to the host avoids slow pages and surprise errors after a move.
