What It Is
A shortcode is a shorthand tag in square brackets that tells WordPress to insert something more complex in its place. For example, a forms plugin might give you a shortcode like [contact-form id="3"], and wherever you paste it, the full form appears. WordPress includes a few of its own, and many plugins add more. It is like writing "see attached" in a letter instead of copying the whole document into it.
Why It Matters for Your Business
Shortcodes let non-technical users add features from plugins into pages without touching real code. A tennis coach could paste one shortcode to show a lesson calendar and another to show testimonials. The catch is that shortcodes depend on the plugin that created them. If you deactivate that plugin, the feature vanishes and visitors may see the raw text in brackets instead.
Good to Know
Before removing or replacing a plugin, search your site for its shortcodes so you know which pages will be affected. In the block editor there is a dedicated Shortcode block, and many plugins now offer their own blocks, which are usually easier to manage. If you see stray bracketed text on a live page, it is a sign a plugin was removed or broke.
