What It Is
When you register a domain, you must give the registrar your name, address, email and phone number. Domain privacy keeps those details out of public WHOIS lookups. Instead, the public record shows a proxy or a redacted entry, and messages are forwarded to you. It is like having an unlisted phone number: you are still reachable, but not by everyone.
Why It Matters for Your Business
Without privacy, a home-based business owner, such as a tennis coach who runs lessons from home, could have a home address and cell number visible to anyone. That often leads to spam calls, fake invoices and offers to buy services you do not need. Privacy reduces that noise and protects your personal information.
Good to Know
Many registrars include privacy for free, and some apply it automatically. Note that some country-code domains do not allow it. Keep your real contact details accurate behind the scenes, because that is where renewal and transfer notices go. An old or abandoned email address there can cost you the domain.
