What It Is
A domain transfer is the process of moving your domain from one registrar company to another. You keep the same name. Only the company that manages it changes. Think of it as moving your bank account to a new bank while keeping the same account holder. The new registrar requests the domain, and you prove you are allowed to move it.
Why It Matters for Your Business
Businesses transfer domains to consolidate everything in one place, to get better support or pricing, or to take control away from an old provider. A contractor whose domain sits in a former designer’s account can transfer it into his own account so he is never locked out again.
Good to Know
Before transferring, unlock the domain, turn off privacy if the old registrar requires it, and get the auth code. Domains usually cannot be transferred for a set period after they are registered or last transferred. Check that your DNS settings will carry over, or your email and website could go down.
