What It Is
SMTP stands for Simple Mail Transfer Protocol. It is the method computers use to send email. When you hit send, your phone or email program hands the message to an outgoing mail server using SMTP, and that server passes it along to the recipient’s server. It works like a postal service’s trucks moving letters between sorting centers. SMTP handles sending, while IMAP or POP3 handle reading.
Why It Matters for Your Business
SMTP matters most when your website needs to send email, such as contact form notifications or order receipts. Many web servers can send mail directly, but those messages often lack proper authentication and end up in spam or vanish entirely. A contractor might not realize for months that quote requests from the website were never reaching the inbox.
Good to Know
For a WordPress site, the usual fix is an SMTP plugin connected to your real email provider or a transactional email service, so website messages are sent the same trustworthy way as your normal email. When setting up email on a phone or computer, you will need the outgoing (SMTP) server name, port and login, which your provider lists in its help pages.
