CAPTCHA Explained.

In one sentenceA CAPTCHA is a quick test on a website, like a checkbox, puzzle or invisible check, that tries to tell real people apart from automated spam bots.

What It Is

A CAPTCHA is a small challenge that tries to confirm a visitor is a human rather than an automated program. You may have seen ones that ask you to pick all the pictures with traffic lights, type wavy letters or simply tick "I’m not a robot." Many modern versions run quietly in the background and only show a puzzle when something looks suspicious. The name is an acronym meaning a test to tell computers and humans apart.

Why It Matters for Your Business

Without some protection, contact forms and signup forms attract spam, sometimes hundreds of junk messages a day. That buries real inquiries and can even get your site’s outgoing email flagged. A CAPTCHA, or a similar anti-spam tool, keeps a tennis coach’s inbox focused on real lesson requests instead of fake offers and suspicious links. It can also slow down bots trying to guess login passwords.

Good to Know

Hard puzzles frustrate real customers and can block people who use screen readers. Where possible, choose an invisible or low-friction option first, and add a visible challenge only if spam continues. After adding any CAPTCHA, test your form on a phone to make sure it still submits smoothly.
