Domain Name Explained.

In one sentenceA domain name is the address people type to reach your website, like yourbusiness.com, and it can also power your professional email addresses.

What It Is

A domain name is the human-friendly address of your website. Computers find each other using strings of numbers, but nobody wants to remember those, so a domain name works like a contact name in your phone: you tap a name, and the phone handles the number behind it. A domain has a name you choose (such as smithplumbing) and an ending (such as .com).

Why It Matters for Your Business

Your domain is often the first thing a customer sees on a business card, truck wrap or Google listing. A short, clear domain is easier to remember and to say over the phone. It also lets you use email like jane@smithplumbing.com instead of a free address, which looks more established and builds trust with new customers.

Good to Know

Register the domain in your own name or your business’s name, not your web designer’s. Keep the login somewhere safe. If the person who registered it leaves, you can lose control of your address, and getting it back can take weeks of paperwork. A shared company login, kept in a password manager, works well.
