TXT Record Explained.

In one sentenceA TXT record is a DNS record that holds text notes about your domain, commonly used to prove ownership and to protect your email from spoofing.

What It Is

A TXT record, short for text record, stores a short piece of text in your domain’s DNS. It does not point visitors anywhere. Instead, it carries information that other services read. Think of it as a note pinned to your front door that delivery companies and inspectors check. Many services ask you to add a specific TXT value to prove you control the domain.

Why It Matters for Your Business

TXT records are essential for email. Three important email safeguards, SPF, DKIM and DMARC, are published as TXT records. They tell receiving mail servers which senders are allowed to use your domain. Without them, your invoices and appointment reminders are more likely to land in spam, and scammers find it easier to fake email from your business.

Good to Know

A domain should have only one SPF record. If two services each ask you to add SPF, combine them into a single TXT record. Two separate SPF records can cause email checks to fail. Ask each provider for its include value and add it to the one existing record instead of creating a new one.
