Theme Explained.

In one sentenceA theme is a package of design files that controls the overall look and layout of a WordPress or similar site, without changing its content.

What It Is

A theme sets the look and feel of a whole website: the fonts, colors, header, footer and how pages and posts are laid out. In WordPress, you can switch themes and your written content and images stay put, much like changing the clothes on a mannequin. The theme decides presentation, while your actual words, photos and settings live separately in the content management system.

Why It Matters for Your Business

Your theme has a big influence on speed, mobile-friendliness and how easily you can make changes yourself. A lightweight, well-supported theme helps a bakery’s site load fast and look sharp on phones. A bloated theme crammed with every possible feature can slow the site down and make updates risky. If the theme’s developer stops maintaining it, you may also face security gaps over time.

Good to Know

Choose a theme that is actively updated, has good reviews and does not lock you into a single company’s tools. If you plan to customize the code, use a child theme so your changes survive updates. And before switching themes on a live site, try the new one on a staging copy first, because menus and widgets often need rearranging.
