Website Migration Explained.

In one sentenceWebsite migration is the process of moving a website from one host, server, domain or platform to another while keeping its content, rankings and email working.

What It Is

A website migration means moving your site somewhere new. That could be a new hosting company, a new server, a new domain name, or a new platform, such as from a website builder to WordPress. It is a lot like moving house. Everything has to be packed carefully, delivered to the new place, set up again, and your mail has to be redirected so nothing gets lost.

Why It Matters for Your Business

A smooth migration is often invisible to customers, but a careless one can cause downtime, broken links, lost form entries, missing email and a drop in Google rankings. A plumbing company that changes its domain name without setting up redirects may find its old search rankings vanish, along with the calls they used to bring in.

Good to Know

Plan ahead. Make a full backup first, keep the old hosting active until the new site is confirmed working, and lower your DNS TTL a day or two in advance so the switch spreads faster. Copy your email records along with the website. If URLs change, set up 301 redirects from every old address to its new one, then check Google Search Console for errors.
